The results are in and, like many Americans, I was shocked – and not real happy.

So this morning I called my Granny Ba in Iowa, seeking her hard-earned and beautiful wisdom. While she was obviously disappointed, she encouraged me to keep my head up saying,

“There is always hope, this is America.”

She went on to say:

“It is easier for me to say this at 81, than it is for you to understand at 32, but don’t waste your time on emotions. Use that emotion to figure out what you care about and then do something about it.”

She told me to take action. To be a voice. To tell others how important their voices are and to speak up for those that don’t have one.

So I’m taking a step back. I’m taking my grandma’s advice and a page from Michelle’s book and going high. And I think you should too.

Here’s what I propose:

  1. Decide what issues really matter to you – make a list. Circle the top 1 or 2 that get you fired up.
  2. Google that issue + Kansas City and see how you can get involved. (if you need some inspiration, check out this post)
  3. Figure out the best way you can get involved. And then do it.
  4. Encourage your friends and family to do the same. We are stronger together.
